Big
Island
Elementary
Incubator and Brooder Pack (5/09)
The first grade students in Ms. Baker's class will be so
excited when the see their eggs hatch! The students will experience the
cycle of life as well as learning to care for the animals and beginning to
understand the farming industry. Teachers in higher grades will also be
able to use the set to teach biological topics such as blood circulation,
respiration and bones. Students will learn observation and record keeping
skills as well as an understanding of physical development, structure and
function of the body.
Leveled Readers (5/09)
A generous donation from RR Donnelley Printing Company makes
this award to Big Island Elementary School possible. The standard textbook
cannot address the reading levels of each student because there is a vast range
of reading levels within each grade level. These funds will allow Ms.
Whitt and Ms. Wilson to purchase a variety of books that cover several different
reading levels. The teachers can then group students with others that are
reading at approximately the same level for a guided reading lesson.
Differentiated instruction enables students to work on a level that is
manageable, yet moderately challenging. The students are so excited about
their new books and are most grateful to RR Donnelley for supporting this award.
SMARTboard & LCD Projector
The SMARTboard is the
new blackboard! Technology is such a huge part of our everyday life now and we
need to incorporate this into our teaching and learning. The SMARTboard allows
teachers and students to access and display websites, run educational software,
highlight and review notes from a class discussion, deliver Power Point
presentations and much more. This board is touch sensitive and interactive. It
provides the ability to show and do rather than just tell. Students are
motivated to learn with this new technology. Ms. Creasey, the technology
teacher, will be working with all the teachers on how to incorporate this new
technology in their classroom lessons.
