Reading Comprehension Kit (5/09)

Reading is the core skill that impacts learning in every subject which is why Ms. Pennington is so excited to start using this comprehension kit.  The kit includes short fiction and nonfiction stories on poster-sized boards which is ideal for individual and group instruction.  The also includes lesson plans, transparencies, and write-on/wipe-off comprehension posters.  The students will learn critical comprehension strategies such as making connections, answering and generations questions, recognizing text structures and summarizing.

Read Along Listening Center (5/09)

Ms. Spirko's 2nd grade class will work on strengthening their reading skills with the Listening Center.  The Center contains books and tapes along with a variety of activities to accompany the stories.  Students first reads the story to themselves and the listen to the story on tape.  The combination of media gives the students the opportunity to improve their oral, listening, and speaking vocabulary.  They will work on skills such as accuracy, fluency, expression, voice, tempo, and pitch.

Phonics Books, DC's, Audiopod Tabletop (5/09)

Ms. Popowitch knows that students need to learn through many different methods such as kinesthetic, visual and auditory.  This set will allow students to be exposed to a subject through multiple facets which will increase their comprehension.  These books and CD's focus on reinforcing phonic skills, short vowels, long vowels and vowel teams.

Literacy Bags (5/09)

We all know that the home is the first classroom for children.  The role of the parent as teacher enforces the importance of education.  Ms. Newcomb and Ms. Robertson will be using these funds to purchase items that will be included in take-home literacy bags.  Each kit will contain a book, activity sheets, journal pages, a parent-student contract, student stickers and a resource guide filled with cross-curricular ideas, recipes, games, and other activities.  The literacy bags (seen pictured below) will provide a bridge between school and home that allows for the development of a positive attitude toward learning.

Physical Education Equipment

Congratulations to Ms. Masters who was selected as the Elementary Level Teacher of the Year for 2006-2007. Ms. Masters knows how important it is to have all students learning healthy habits at a young age in order to develop a fit lifestyle. This equipment will allow the teacher to offer more stations and rotations classes, focus on fine motor skills and offer new and innovative approaches to gain students’ interest. This program aligns with the FIT FOR LIFE Bedford County initiative.
