Ms. Popowitch has requested an array of language, math, and science centers for her first grade students. These centers use a variety of methods to enforce newly learned skills. For example, one of the language learning centers allows children to use stamps to fill in a “blend” reinforcing phonics skills. A math center uses a magnetic patterning kit and a science center engages students to sort objects as a way to better understand the relationship of weather to the life processes of plants and animals. Children at this age are more engaged in learning when a play-like environment can be created.
